7 Ways to Make a Lasting First Impression

first impressions

Whether you’re interviewing for a job or out on a date, the impression you make is crucial to achieving a positive outcome. In fact, studies show that the window for a first impression is only seven seconds long.1 Can you act quickly on your feet and ensure that you make those seven seconds a great reflection of who you are? We’ve got seven ways for you to get ready to do just that!

  1. Introduce yourself. If you’re out on a date or headed to an interview, there is a very good chance that the person already knows your name. However, it gives you the chance to introduce yourselves by the name you preferred to be called, as well as a chance to say how nice it is to meet.
  2. Remember and use the person’s name. A casual use of the person’s name in conversation signals respect and absolute focus on your conversation. Additionally, studies have shown that people feel positively when others use their name.2
  3. Share a sincere compliment. You will make them feel good about themselves (a feeling you want you be associated with) and demonstrates that you are actively paying attention to details.
  4. Dress to impress. You don’t need designer clothes or flashy jewelry to impress. Dress in a way that makes you feel confident and like you put thought into your choice.
  5. Let your body language do some talking. Good posture and eye contact show the other person you are actively listening. Avoid crossing your arms or angling your body away from them.
  6. Be concise when you speak or answer questions. Too much information can make your answer seem convoluted. When you get straight to the point, you demonstrate your listening skills as well as your confidence.
  7. Seek common ground to help keep the conversation flowing. Awkward pauses in conversation aren’t comfortable for either party involved. Try to steer the conversation toward common ground. Ease of conversation will make you seem charismatic and self-assured.
