Most people make health related resolutions for New Year’s, whether it’s to lose weight, quit smoking, or lower their overall stress level. This year, why not take a different tack and resolve to make your personal finances healthier? Here are some finance related New Year’s resolutions that will make you happier and wealthier.

Save Money

Saving money can be a challenge if your budget is tight. However, if you can save even a little money each week, say $10, you’ll have $520 in savings by the end of the year. Put any extra money you get, from birthday gifts to your tax return into the bank and watch your savings grow.

Pay Down Your Debt

Debt can accumulate quickly and may seem overwhelming at times. Devise a strategy to pay your debt down. Just like saving money, paying your debt a little bit at a time will add up in the long run.

Get a New Job

Now that the economy is moving again, the time is ripe to look for a new job. Treat finding a job like a job itself. Take time everyday to look through classifieds, fine-tune your resume, and apply for positions.

Get More Education

Paying money for classes may not seem like something with immediate financial reward but by learning new skills, you make yourself more attractive to either prospective new employers or your current employer. Education makes you more promotable, more hirable, and in the long run, you’ll earn more money.

Make Connections

Meeting people is a great way to feel better about yourself as you make new friends. It’s also a great way to open yourself up for financial opportunities. Friends are the ones who will help you get your foot in the door for new jobs, and give you leads on new chances to earn extra cash. Whatever you resolve to do, the new year is a great time to get your financial house in order and make this your best money year ever.
