Call Me! Exploring Different Forms of Communication

Once upon a time if you wanted to communicate with someone, you had to go see them in person. Eventually, letter writing came into existence. Nowadays, we have tons of options when we want to get ahold of a friend or family member, from Skype to email to Snapchat. When it comes time to send someone a message, how do you choose which communication method to use? Here are a few of the most popular ways to communicate:

Text Message

Text messaging on your smartphone is the quickest, easiest way to send a message. It’s perfect for short hellos, or simple requests like “Can you pick up milk on the way home?” Watch out for autocorrect if you want your message to be as accurate as possible.

Social Media

Social Media is a great way to stay in touch with pretty much everyone you’ve ever met. Whether it’s Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterest, social media lets us share photos, news articles, and our own original messages. While social media is great, it can feel a little short and impersonal.

Email

If you need to send a longer message, a more formal message, or a message that you don’t want the whole world to see, email may be for you. Email is quick, easy, and efficient. However, it’s still not the most personal way to send a message…

Letter Writing

Sometimes the old-fashioned ways are the best ones. Writing a letter by hand, with a pen and paper may take a little more time but your loved one will be delighted know that you’ve put the effort in. Make the letter extra special by using fancy paper.

Phone Calls

Sometimes you just need to hear the sound of someone’s voice. The phone is still a great way to reach out and talk to someone. The phone is still one of the best ways to communicate and now that nearly everyone has a smartphone or cellphone, reaching people via the phone is easier than ever.

Video Chat

Another recent telecommunication innovation is video chat services like Skype, Gchat, and FaceTime. Video Chat let’s you hear AND see the person or persons you’re talking to. While it’s not always as convenient as a phone call, it can make your message seem way more personal.

Going to See Someone in Person

Of course, the best way to communicate is to talk to someone one on one, in person. When it comes to getting your message across, and showing someone you care, seeing them live and in the flesh is still the best way to communicate.
